If you’ve never gone quail hunting, you’re simply missing out on one of the most popular types of hunting across the country. From the slightly more relaxed nature of the hunt to the ability to bring a canine companion along for the trip, there are so many reasons why countless hunters partake in this sport every year. For those just getting started, here are a few tips to get the most out of the experience.

One of the first things you need to decide on for your quail hunting trip is which type of gun to use in order to most effectively hunt quail. In general, you’re always going to want to bring a shotgun, but what type? Either a 12-gauge or a 410 gun will work best for a couple of reasons. Not only do these guns have decent ranges to start with, but they are still powerful enough to take down a quail even at a significant distance.

Like we mentioned earlier, having an experienced hunting dog by your side is another great aspect of quail hunting. Besides the benefit of having some extra company, a trained dog can help you track quail coveys. If you’re hunting in a large group, don’t hesitate to bring more than one dog; They will be able to quickly sniff out quail, pointing you in the right direction.

A patient quail hunter is usually rewarded, so stay as quiet as possible and walk into the wind to mask your scent. Take some time to learn the lay of the land you’re hunting, and make sure you pay careful attention to the ground to spot any fresh quail tracks. The more familiar you or your guide is with the area and the routines of the quail that live there, the better your chances of having a successful hunt.

If you’re as excited about quail hunting as we are, we’re happy to let you know that there are still several slots available to hunt with Krooked River Ranch Outfitters this season. Browse our website for additional details, and contact us today to get on the trail for quail!
